How to Change Eating Habits

Simply put, a person could use hundreds of diets and supplements to lose weight but unless two things happen, any weight loss would only be temporary. The first thing is that a person who needs to lose weight has to change the way in which he or she eats and there has to be exercise incorporated into the daily regimen. These two factors are the true key to success for weight loss.

The problem is that changing the way in which a person eats is tough. After all, many people have been cooking and eating the same way for 20, 30, 40, or 50 years. Now, they are being asked to undo an entire lifetime of habit and pattern to enter into unknown territory. While people want to lose weight, this is a scary thought but it needs to be viewed as a change that will drop the pounds while adding years of life.

It is never too late to lose weight, regardless of age or level of obesity. The body will not automatically change but it will respond to changes the person makes. Therefore, to change eating habits, it has to start with the mind and a little bit of courage. People need to realize that the processed and fat foods being consumed are killing them. Life is too precious and short so getting into shape is what matters.

While this might sound like a drastic measure, some people eat not because they are hungry but for some underlying issues that need to be addressed. For this reason, there are times when therapy or counseling would help disclose the reasons for overeating or choosing the wrongs foods. It could be due to a divorce, job loss, loneliness, boredom, a childhood trauma, health, etc. Identifying these triggers for eating too much or the wrong way will help the person get on track.

Additionally, people need to understand that eating healthy does not mean eating nasty tasting food or salads seven days a week. Look, food is delicious, the thick sauces and gravies and the sweet creaminess of desserts but just because a person changes his or her eating habits does not mean sacrificing on flavor. In fact, learning to create dishes using natural ingredients and spices will often result in better tasting food.

One option that some people consider is having one cheat day a week. Now, this does not mean going all out and doing something dumb, but creating a single day in which a special treat is okay. For instance, someone who eats lean meats, chicken, fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates throughout the week could choose a Friday or Saturday night to eat out in a favorite restaurant or enjoy a dessert. This way, the person does not feel as if he or she is being deprived.

Changing eating habits takes a little time and practice. However, we would encourage everyone to at least try, taking some risks in the kitchen and experimenting with new flavors, textures, and foods. The benefits are so great that it would be a shame to continue on the path of destruction.
